Bayeux memorial

The memorial at Bayeux is engraved with the names of 1800 commonwealth land force men and women who have no known grave. They fell during the landings and the ensuing Battle of Normandy on 6 June 1944. An inscription in latin reads: We, once conquered by William, have now set free the Conqueror's native land.
