Day 22 of the Normandy Advent Calendar looks at Coutance’s public garden.

Coutance's public garden

The photo shows one of the feature flower beds in 2016. La Manche region hosted the first three stages of the Tour de France. The first day of the tour started at Mont-Saint-Michel and ended in Paris some three weeks later. There were bicycles everywhere in Normandy to celebrate the event. The tour also went through Coutances and even the town hall was decorated with a huge yellow jersey.

One of the styles of planting used is mosaiculture. A giant topiary-like sculpture is created using annual bedding plants to cover a wire frame. In Coutances this forms the centre-piece with the theme changing each year. Another style is the one shown in the photo where images are created using succulents.
