Day 6 of my Normandy Advent Calendar. France's second tallest lighthouse stands 75 metres tall on the Cotentin coast at Gatteville. You can walk up to the top, climbing up the 365 stone steps. The thick walls of the lighthouse are peppered with 52 windows which provide a welcome window sill to take a rest. The view from the top is magnificent. I visited on a beautifully sunny day in September and enjoyed the magnificent panorama of the Normandy coastline. I had to stop several times on the way up to catch my breath. Coming down is certainly quicker but your legs do feel it. The lighthouse was built between 1829 and 1834.
