Here’s what some of the gite’s guests have said about their stay at Normandy Gite Holidays
What a treat to be the first guests in this lovely, cosy and welcoming gute during this Easter weekend! After long days exploring the rich cultural heritage of Normandy, it has been a delight to return here in the evenings and snuggle with the family in front of the fire. Chris, you’ve been wonderful – thank you for your insider tips and friendly advice! Though it’s a shame this has been a short stay, we’re already looking forward to coming back.

We have had a truly wonderful stay in the gite. We have spent our days sightseeing and it has been lovely to come back to a place that feels like home! We thoroughly recommend the zoo to any families staying in the future, and the aquarium in Cherbourg is perfect for rainy days. Thank you, Chris, for a wonderful holiday – we can’t wait to return!
Ollie, Katie and Eleanor
We’ve both agreed that we have never stayed at such a well equipped gite/uk cottage. A beautifully tasteful, superior property renovation. Well done, Chris. All the hard work was worth it!
As for the area is concerned, don’t be in too much of a hurry to get to the normal ‘tourist sights’ as there are some local delights you could miss if you don’t look. We went to a folk evening in the square and a local choir evening (sounds dry but far from it!). Ask at the Tourist Information Office. Cheap meal galore (except Mont St Michel). Beware £10 at MSM for parking.
All in all, a lovely relaxing holiday made possible by charming, attentive (but respectful) hostess. Thanks, Chris.

We are in France for the Euro 2016 and have been touring since 11 June. We have had a great time in Normandy, despite bad weather. The gite is wonderful, so well-equipped and so spacious. Thanks, Chris, for the warm welcome and for your concern (leaving a note to warn us) about the impending thunderstorms. We are sorry to be leaving (have to support our team -NI) but we hope to be back someday to enjoy more of Maison Ella. Many thanks, Chris

Our stay was great and Chris was a huge help. This was the first family holiday we had been on in around 10 years and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. I am used to being on holidays where I get up and do things and it given this was an area I wasn’t familiar with, I was hesitant at first about what I would do. Upon arriving though the gite was full of brochures and maps telling us of all the locations! We actually used one of the maps and just drove around the area with only this map. Chris was also a great help in telling us what to do. Seeing Mont Saint Michel is a must as well as all the little villages surrounding the area. Overall it was a great experience and I would definitely recommend the gite to my friends thinking of visiting the area. Great holiday home.

We have had a wonderful holiday – lovely family time which is very rare now our eldest son has turned 14. The gite has been a perfect base to explore a beautiful area. The weather hasn’t been perfect but it hasn’t stopped us. We really have made the most of our week here. Granville has given us our best days. We spent our first and last days there and even got a little sunburnt today. St Malo was another place to visit as well at Mont St Michel. Yesterday we visited the Normandy Landing Beaches. The American cemetery and the sight ofover 9000 graves was a truly humbling experience.
Chris has been very helpful from the booking stage and throughout our stay.

Very well appointed 3 bedroom converted barn. Chris has really thought about what holiday makers need and provided it. High chair, cot, nappy sacks, shade umbrella, etc are all there. The gite is very modern and feels well built. Captures the sun during the day, and I imagine stays warm in winter, together with the help of a stove in the lounge and central heating. We absolutely loved the roller shutters on ally the bedroom windows which completely block out all sunlight!! Well situated amongst plenty of places to visit – local zoo is great, nice beaches and villages. It would have been nice to be able to walk into the local village on a footpath (have to walk single file along a busy road, but driving if effortless and convenient.

Before reviewing the gite itself, I’d like to say a word about Chris, the owner. She is very thoughtful, and has provided every amenity any guest could wish for. Although she lives nearby, she is careful to mind her guests’ privacy, but is always cheerfully available if there is anything she can do to help you enjoy your time at Gavray, even offering some delicious pears picked that moment from her garden. She is very well-informed about the locality and, when it comes to making your reservation, she is efficiency itself. The gite is newly renovated, bright, and spacious, well-fitted out, and comfortable. There is a garden, garden furniture, and plenty of parking space. The gite is situated not far from a fairly busy road, but we were not at all troubled by noise. We were able to wander round the local lanes, and our son-in-law actually ran most of them, even though the weather was very warm! The town of Gavray is nearby, and well within reach of all that Normandy has to offer. It is only hour and half from Cherbourg, so an easy run from the ferry port. If you chance to be here over the first weekend of September, nearby Percy, a charming town, holds an annual tractor and vintage car show. Slightly mad and brilliant atmosphere. Frites and beer to add to the fun. On a sunny day and if you work the tide timetable to be sure the sea is out, go to Monmartin-sur-Mer. On the brow of the hill above, there is a breath-taking view out over the wonderful beach, and the little town centre itself has a beach-side cafe and even a tiny art gallery.
Sandra, September 2016
There is nothing to fault this contemporary finish barn conversion that is light and airy. There is plenty of space for dining and leisure. Of particular note in November was the insulation and heating that kept the place warm throughout the night and day. The beds and bedding were warm and comfortable. Plenty of storage space also. We know the area well, having lived there for over twenty years previously. There was a warm welcome and nothing was too much trouble for the local owner. There were no niggles or complaints. We have already booked again for 2017.This holiday home in a quiet setting is a gem not to be missed.

We’ve had a fabulous time here in Normandy. There’s been so much to do – beaches with jolly beach huts and sand dunes in addition to the poignancy of visiting the D-Day landing beach at Arromanches. Cathedrals and churches galore. Lovely rural roads, peace and tranquility and the joy of seeing Mont St Michel. The gite was perfect. Thank you, Chris, for your hospitality and tips. Oh and we mustn’t forget the cycling – our reason for coming – Normandy is not flat! We will definitely recommend.

Chris, you have a lovely place here! Your hard work over the last three years is apparent, great job! Ideal location – Mont St Michel, and St Malo (I had to go there after reading All The Light We Cannot See). Pierre really wanted to visit Chartres, so we went, regardless of a very late start. Local cider mill was fun. We visited William’s fort in Caen after seeing the Bayeux tapestry. We appreciate all the info you’ve gathered and made available. Did you also arrange for the wonderful weather? Thank you!

Alas, another visit to Maison Ella is over, but we have booked the gite again. Nothing is too much trouble for our host. The venue is clean, tidy and fresh with no wavering of the high standards that are due. Keep up the good work!
Darrell and Heather, Dorset
We’ve had a fabulous week in this very well appointed gite. Clean, modern, comfortable with two excellent shower rooms and more than enough crockery and cutlery for 6 (makes a change from the 6 of everything places we have visited!). Chris has been a joy to deal with, both electronically during booking/payment and in person when we arrived – discreet but attentive. The welcome basket of local goodies was much appreciated along with the offer of a ‘wee bit of shopping’ to settle us in after a Sunday arrival. We won’t hesitate to recommend Maison Ella to anyone wishing a quiet break in a lovely gite not far from any of the major tourist attractions of Brittany and Normandy. Thanks, Chris, for a lovely week.

This is our first trip to this part of France and we have really enjoyed it. The gite has worked well for us having everything we need from the internet (for our 17 year old son) through to spacious living accommodation. It has provided us with a great base for us to visit the area. The house is lovely and Chris was able to point us to lots of places to see. She helped us when the older ‘kids’ wanted to go and watch a local football match in St-Lo. We have had a lovely time and hope to come back soon.

We have had a really wonderful stay in this lovely house. Chris has been extremely welcoming and friendly. The house is comfortable, spacious and beautifully designed. It’s been so relaxing here – we’d love to stay a bit longer! Thank you so much.
Mike, Irene, Meg and Summer, London
We loved staying at your house. It’s beautiful and we enjoyed Gavray, Granville, Coutances and Mont St Michel. Thank you for your advice to visit it at night. It wasn’t crowded and the island was beautiful at sunset. The invasion beaches were very impressive. The house is clean and complete and all the appliances worked perfectly! Thank you for all the information in the folder and for your goody basket.

Our short week is now over and we are heading home tomorrow 🙁 We have never had a holiday in France before and with two boys aged 19 and 16, we weren’t sure if they’d enjoy it or not. We needn’t have worried – they thoroughly enjoyed it. The gite is perfect with all that anyone would need in a family home and with the weather being so nice we have had a chilled out few days. Thanks to Chris for helping us find interesting places to visit including Huisnes-sur-Mer (German memorial/burial site), Mont St Michel but especially the Abbaye de Hambye. What a little gem to visit. There are so many places to go to that we have run out of time. On our way to Cherbourg tomorrow we intend going to Omaha beach which apparently will leave us crying. I think a re-visit is definitely on the cards. Granville is a definite place to go to, especially the upper, old town (a nice walk) with stunning views. We have loved our time here and will definitely be back. Thanks for your hospitality.
Alison, Stew, Joseph and Harry, South Shields
What a nice gite is Maison Ella, modern but cosy and very well furnished. A lovely house for a nice holiday! Chris is a friendly hostess with a lot of respect for the privacy of the guests. She had had many nice tips on sights, playgrounds, restaurants and all the crowds in popular places which caused us to have a fairly quiet day at the Mont St Michel. Th eAbbaye de Hambye is very impressive to see and with children a ride with the ‘velorail’ (www.velorail-normandie.fr) in Conde-sur-Vire is a nice activity. The weather was good for us and we enjoyed Maison Ella and spending time together.

What a wonderful gite you have at ‘Maison Ella’. Well equipped, complete, clean, nice, cosy, comfortable – like home? IT is situated very well in beautiful Normandy. We could not think of a better place to stay. Thanks for the warm welcome. The basket was very much appreciated and we liked all of it. Thanks for your hospitality, for telling us about the hotspots to see and do and answering all our questions on what to visit whe.n We will tell our friends in Holland about this place. Keep up the good work, it’s really lovely here.

It was such a great stay here at the ‘Maison Ella’. It was so great. We had so much fun and also a very comfortable stay. Thanks for being so nice! (Alia)
Such a nice cottage you have. It’s very clean, modern and also cosy. I love this place so much. It’s very well equipped, like the welcome basket which was appreciated and the sports toys which were great to have around. You are such a nice person and I’m very happy my mom found your place and I will tell her she should book here again. It was a lovely stay. I will miss this place but hope to come back. Thanks for everything. (Sophia)

We have had a very nice holiday. Even the weather was much better than expected. The gite is perfect. In everything we see that you want to make your customers happy. You are very thoughtful and we felt very welcome. Thanks for this. We wish you lots of success and good luck.

Five cyclists from North Devon had a great stay here. Many thanks. Everything was perfect. Lovely showers after 70+ miles in the saddle! It’s our 6th Tour de Normandy/Brittany and definitely the best place we’ve stayed in!

Thank you so much for such a lovely stay in your wonderful cottage. Following our stay with you last year, we are so glad we returned this year. You have made us feel so welcome. The little touches really were kind – the toys for the girls and the bottle of bubbly on my 30th birthday! We are looking forward to returning again.

What a wonderful week we have had in Normandy! The House has been so comfortable and warm and has everything that we have needed to feel at home. So much to see and do in this area – we managed Granville, Coutances, Le Mont St Michel, Villedieu and, of course, Gavray. The Chateau at Gratot is truly magical! Thank you, Chris, for the very generous welcome basket, milk, bubbly etc. We have had such a relaxing stay and look forward to perhaps returning some day. A wonderful house in a beautiful location with a lovely host! Thank you!

Looking for a great open and calming place to base yourself in Normandy – then go here. This is a great holiday home.
I will say this is not the place to go if you want a small exposed brick open fire traditional French house, this is a modern equivalent with all mod cons which was perfect for our needs. As much as I love a traditional French house, I do love having modern facilities on hand and not having to go through the kitchen to the bathroom and I’ve always disliked curtains instead of cupboards in the kitchen so this place was perfect.
The pictures don’t do this place justice, it is open, spacious, relaxing. I went with my husband and a friend of ours, there was probably too much space for us just being 3 but that was great, we weren’t on top of each other at all and could each have alone time if wanted.
We arrived from the ferry in December to an amazing welcome basket of provisions which were most welcome. Being able to quickly whip up some eggs and brioche for a snack instead of having to go straight to a food shop was fantastic. The produce in the basket was high quality. There was a nice bottle of Normandie cider in the fridge and an extra wee bottle of bubbles since we were staying for Christmas.
The house is very well equipped, most notably in the kitchen. We were determined to streamline packing this year staying for Christmas as we had taken most of our own equipment before staying elsewhere. There was no need to bring anything here, the kitchen had everything we needed, even for doing a full Christmas dinner with goose and all the trimmings (albeit with a poorly husband doing all the cooking).
I loved the entrance, huge glass panels and the area full of light as you enter the house. This creates the sense of space immediately and I have always been a fan of a balcony area which is the landing between bedrooms.
The bathrooms (1 ensuite, 1 family and an extra loo downstairs) were all good sizes with greta showers and well decorated. You can tell that everything was new only recently and is kept in good repair.
It was lovely to have a well stocked mini library in the living room which my friend worked his way through with great speed.
Overall, this is a great place to spend time or use as a base for exploring. The owner has compiled a great resource pack of places to visit and things to do if you are lost for ideas. The owner has done an amazing job with this place and I can’t recommend it highly enough.

We have really enjoyed our stay in Normandy. Actually, we would have liked to stay longer. Your gite is wonderfully located for travel to many parts of this region. Gavray has the best butcher and was very friendly. Chris, thank you for taking the time to give us directions and to suggest places to visit. Your gite is a wonderful spot to return to in the evening after a day of doing the ‘touristy thing’. Next time, we will try not to bring snow.

A very wet two weeks – but very cosy in Chris’ gite. Lovely place to stay and good for trips to see the D-Day landings – especially Utah. Lots to learn at the various beaches – but only able to do so much D-Day stuff especially for O and K (9 & 7).
A few castles and chateaux to visit – Pirou excellent despite the rain and Gratot chateau especially enjoyed by O & K.
The oyster beds and beaches around Gouville -sur-mer and the colourful beach huts were interesting. Mont St Michel has obvious charm but it is very touristy! St Malo, however, was an unexpected highlight and worth the distance to travel.
The cathedral in Coutances is most certainly worth a visit and the city is worth exploring (though the weather and other plans meant we saw only a little). The gardens are no doubt beautiful in summer but the children enjoyed the labyrinth in the form of a small tower.
Bayeux and its tapestry is a must – the children get a separate audio which runs about the same time as the adults – and the audio moves you at a fair pace – you won’t get bored!! Afterwards, there’s a more standard set of displays including a very decent model of a typical village/town of the Norman times.
It was lovely having my father to stay for a few days and he brought some beautiful weather to round off the holidays. Thank you, Chris, for being a most accommodating host. It is an amazingly well-equipped gite – home from home!!

We’ve had a very nice stay at your gite, Maison Ella. It is all well equipped and very comfortable after returning from a wet day. Thank you for all your information by email and the blue map. Also for the welcome basket. We’ve enjoyed or short week here. (Mont-Saint-Michel, Coutances, D-Day beaches, Granville, Hambye abbey.) Normandy is beautiful and when we’re visiting it again we would like to come back to Maison Ella.

We had a wonderful week in your gite! It’s very comfortable and our teenagers were very happy with the good wi-fi. We liked the blue binder with all the information. Normandy is beautiful! Au revoir.

Your gite has been a most comfortable place to stay for our week’s break with our son and his family. What’s more we have been fortunate with the weather allowing us to spend time on the nearby beaches in in your pretty garden. We have made great friends with the cows! We have enjoyed various local eateries, in particular The Auberge de L’abbaye at Hambye run by a young husband and wife team. We shall hope to return to Cherbourg sooner rather than later!
Carol, Philip, Ben, Jo, Alex and Olivia, Devon, UK
A huge thank you to Chris for sharing this very comfortable and really well equipped gite. The weather improved also allowing us to enjoy the garden (and visiting cat, who seemed to sense a BBQ!) We have had some amazing days out enjoying the local towns and villages with their markets and pretty streets. Further afield we have been to the landing beaches, Bayeux, Mont-Saint-Michel twice (go later in the day for a bit more peace and ease of getting about).
The seafood has been outstanding – well worth a visit to Cancale – the oyster capital – a dozen for 5,40€! We had to have some there and bring some home for tea, but also amazing seafood by the port in Granville (especially the Petit Mareyeur where you choose your own and get a bespoke platter.
Home time all too soon – we will really miss France but will definitely be back! PS Download the ‘Night Sky’ app and see the dark skies – amazing!

Many thanks for another lovely stay at Maison Ella (third time we’ve visited) and for looking after us so well. We have had a lovely stay at Maison Ella. Thanks a lot for the tips you gave us. There is really a lot to see in Normandy. The most special thing for us was the cattle (calves) market in Gavray on Wednesday morning. We noticed that this is a real tradition in this village.
We have great respect for the way you have built the house. Our compliments for the completeness. You have thought about everything very well.
The weather was perfect for sightseeing and for a beach visit as well. So could our holiday be better? Many thanks!

Thank you for creating a welcoming home that we had the pleasure of staying in. Of the many restaurants we went to, Restaurant de Delice in Gavray is our favourite. We particularly enjoyed our days out at Mont St Michel and zoo de Champrepus. Thanks you for being a wonderful host.
