The Jardin des Plantes in Coutances is one of Normandy’s oldest public gardens. It was created between 1852 and 1855 and is nestled in the centre of the town. Each year there is a different theme to the planting which the industrious gardeners then implement. For 2014 the theme was ‘creatures and insects’ with displays including a frog, bees, snails and this rather large wasp! Themes in previous years have included The Arts and also Disney Characters.
Although not a huge garden, it is beautifully maintained and very colourful. For those with small children, there’s a playground and also a raised maze. It’s well worth a visit. Entrance is free.
