The cathedral in Coutances is my choice for day 10 of the Normandy Advent Calendar.

The cathedral in Coutances

The cathedral is my go-to place for a spot of grounding and reflection. There’s something very calming about it. I call in almost every time I go to Coutances.

It’s a Gothic Roman Catholic structure built from 1210 to 1274. The remains of an earlier Norman cathedral are incorporated into it. The ‘newer’ building was built over the top of the existing one. This means that hidden corridors and passageways were created in the space between the two buildings. You can take a paid tour of these passageways, the upper walkways and the lantern tower.

Although much of Coutances was damaged during World War II, the building escaped relatively unscathed. Rising majestically above the town, it can be seen as far away as Jersey.

Entry is free and it is open every day from 9am until 7pm (6pm in winter). Click here for further details about the cathedral in Coutances.
