Visiting the cathedral in Bayeux is just one of the many things to do in Bayeux. This photo is my choice for day 16 of the Normandy Advent Calendar.
The cathedral was consecrated in 1077 in the presence of William the Conqueror. The Bayeux tapestry was originally hung here. However, the tapestry is now displayed in a wonderful museum that you can also visit.
Major fire damage to the cathedral in the 12th century meant that much of it was re-built. The re-building work was carried out in the 13th century. The Romaneque style was replaced with features such as a rib vault, flying butters and stained glass windows. These are all characteristics of the Gothic style. The very ornate detail in the stonework arches along either side of the nave is also amazing. Monsters, a monkey catcher, lovers and lions are all depicted in stone. And don’t miss the stained glass windows.
